Scale Genie — Privacy & Data Protection

Scale Genie prints weight-based, price-embedded labels for Shopify food retailers. This policy describes exactly what data the app processes, why, and how it is protected.
What we process, and why

What we deliberately do not collect
- No customer data at all. The app does not request order, customer, or checkout access. It cannot see names, emails, addresses, or payment information — no scope is granted that would allow it.
- No payment or card data. No browsing or behavioural tracking. No marketing profiles.
- Label job titles sent to the printing service are non-identifying by rule (a short job reference, never a customer's details).
Data minimisation and use limitation
We process the minimum needed for the features above and use it for nothing else. Data is never sold, rented, shared for advertising, or used for automated decision-making about people.
Where data is processed
Scale Genie is operated from the United States, and data is stored and processed there. If you are in the EEA or UK, this means your data is transferred outside your region; we rely on standard contractual clauses for that transfer, and the details are set out in our Data Processing Addendum.
Storage, security, and retention
- All data is transmitted over TLS (HTTPS), in transit to us and onward.
- Data is encrypted at rest and isolated per shop.
- Printing-account credentials are encrypted using industry-standard authenticated encryption. Access tokens and secrets are never written to logs.
- Counter-device access tokens are stored only as hashes and can be revoked by you at any time.
- Detailed print-job history is pruned after 90 days; label records are retained for one year for reprints and audit, then pruned. Usage counts are retained de-identified.
We describe our security controls in terms of what they protect rather than how they are built. Merchants who need implementation detail for a security review can request it — we would rather answer a named merchant than publish a blueprint.
Service providers
We use a small number of service providers to run Scale Genie — to host the application, store its data, and deliver print jobs to your printer. They process data only to provide those services to us, under contract, and never for their own purposes. If you need the specific providers named — for a security review, or for your own privacy notice — contact us and we will tell you.
Companion apps
Scale Genie is one of three apps by the same developer, and they are designed to work together:
- Barcode Genie reads the labels Scale Genie prints, so a price-embedded barcode rings up at the correct total in Shopify POS. The two apps exchange no data — Barcode Genie simply scans the printed barcode, exactly as any price-embedded scanner would. Scale Genie works with other decoders too.
- Label Genie designs labels. If you have it installed, you can choose to import designs you created there into Scale Genie. Nothing is copied unless you request the import, and only your own designs are ever accessible.
Installing the companions is optional. Nothing about your Scale Genie data is shared between apps unless you explicitly ask for it.
Your rights and controls
- Uninstalling suspends your printing account and deletes your Scale Genie data.
- We honour Shopify's mandatory privacy webhooks (
customers/data_request,customers/redact,shop/redact). Because the app holds no customer data, the customer requests are answered with confirmation that none is held;shop/redactperforms a full deletion of your store's data. - To request information or deletion outside those flows, contact support below.
